In a guest post at Language Log, Sinologist Victor Mair uncovers the source of many of the humorous Chinglish signs that can be found across the country.
Tracking down a forum post from 2003, Mair blames blind application of machine translators—in particular, outdated editions of Kingsoft's QuickTrans software—for rendering 干 ("dry" or "to do") as "fu*k". The latest editions of the software eliminate the profanity.
Your correspondent happens to have a CD of QuickTrans 2002. Here's a screenshot of some dubious translations:
http://www.danwei.org/2007/12/10/JDM071210kingsoftgan.png
The translations ought to be "What do you want to do?" "dry goods," "dried shrimp fried with cabbage," "ginger ale," and "true understanding and effort."
The last line in the above image is from the title of an academic paper that was published in 2003 in the Economic Administrative Cadre Academy Bulletin of Gansu Province (see ESWN for more).
===
* A Solid fu*k (12/08/2007) (KDnet) In issue 2, volume 16, June 2003 of the Kansu province Economic Administrative Cadre Academy Bulletin, there appeared an essay titled <开拓进取,真抓实干,不断开创西部大开发的新局面>. The author Song Chaosu is the Kansu provincial party secretary and the chairman of the Kansu provincial people's congress standing committee.
In the database, the title of the article was translated into English as: Expand Enterprising and Really Grasp Solid fu*k and Continuously Expand and Great the New Situation of Buildings of Western Region.
If there is a "solid fu*k," it is the translation job. A more appropriate translation is: Develop and Forge Ahead with True Understanding and Effort in order to Continuously Create New Situations to Open Up the Western Region."
