four hours, many for the first time in their lives, because they believed

Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight,

we have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red

A little bit earlier this evening, I received an extraordinarily gracious

/ e" b/ G( n7 I1 O# i, |! J. P5 N# FSen. McCain fought long and hard in this campaign. And he's fought even

for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine. We are better off for
; }* I5 D- U1 w m2 E; a" E2 I& Xthe service rendered by this brave and selfless leader.

So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility, where each

Let us remember that, if this financial crisis taught us anything, it's

In this country, we rise or fall as one nation, as one people. Let's resist

immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long.

2 h3 i5 f9 n2 F6 p; j+ ?Let's remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the
( g) o* a; L: ebanner of the Republican Party to the White House, a party founded on the ) ~8 g/ I! F9 X8 f
values of self-reliance and individual liberty and national unity.

$ j, E5 J8 a4 O& z7 A. u& _/ LThose are values that we all share. And while the Democratic Party has won
: x9 _% [( y, G4 W2 C- Ha great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and ! a9 S- J" }! [/ p
determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress.

) H6 X) j6 | q: K9 W" t& V; ?As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, we are not enemies

line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing: Ann ) M8 u' f I6 }% l
Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.; ?5 S4 H5 i3 d/ s x* c
: J, V7 m2 d$ S0 S H# DShe was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no cars
2 x& X% q# C Lon the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldn't vote for
! h4 Y& l+ |, Y" T# ]* `6 L( r! ktwo reasons -- because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin.

At a time when women's voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed, she

- X; p* D6 |: R2 AWhen there was despair in the dust bowl and depression across the land, she ' H; L* p, [$ {6 u0 T) N( w
saw a nation conquer fear itself with a New Deal, new jobs, a new sense of

$ w1 @, |' p% H" \, M! g# G( p7 E# C4 o
When the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world, she was
, l3 w0 A3 U) T& a7 \there to witness a generation rise to greatness and a democracy was saved. # w' H: X8 \" r* c: e" u8 ~
Yes we can.# `1 x& w v/ V( l6 N/ }, x
8 t8 k9 V4 M2 l6 N8 K+ s' ]She was there for the buses in Montgomery, the hoses in Birmingham, a
1 n! j p5 I% D! ?& X: |/ Bbridge in Selma, and a preacher from Atlanta who told a people that "We
" B! W4 {5 F" o/ O* n% [; ~Shall Overcome." Yes we can., }9 P0 e, t, W6 j/ p3 ]1 R+ Z
, Q6 N8 z" F3 b; }. u; `
A man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was 2 r/ q M- s3 S# o/ R' f
connected by our own science and imagination.
( e! k; r( q* A* D8 I8 W
" V; ]- M( v5 W5 N5 T3 b5 }0 y8 EAnd this year, in this election, she touched her finger to a screen, and
3 W1 j9 k2 y1 c2 v' @8 kcast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of 5 t, ^9 n1 J$ n1 U/ r+ e& E1 e: x) H
times and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change.

Yes we can.
